Can you cut a needlepoint pillow or will it unravel?

I bought a new needlepoint pillow at a great deal and want to cut out some of the background (it is a large needlepoint of a dog, but I only want to use a small portion of the middle and cut out some trees in the background) and sew it into a bigger pillow using upholstery fabric. OK so my question is- can I cut the needlepoint down before I sew it? Or do I need to sew around the part I want to keep and THEN cut off the excess?
Thank you!

      of course it wil ravel
if you are extremely careful you might be able to seal the edges of the part you want but this would be extremely tedious and not guarantee that your picture will remain intact

I suggest you use a buttonhole stitch around the area you intend to keep and then carefully cut around the outside of this stitch. You might also want to seal the edges of the stitching for a more secure edging.

      Yes you can cut one.
