Can I use Needlepoint thread to learn how to Crochet?

I am starting a beginning crochet class tomorrow, and I have tons of needlepoint thread/yarn. Can I use that for the class along with the crochet needle? Thank you for your response.

Ask your teacher what the first project is that you will be making and buy a skein of yarn that would work for that item. It’s usually a scarf or potholder. For beginner scarf a cheap skein of acrylic would be fine, or splurge on wool. For the potholder, you can use acrylic but cotton is best.

After all, you are learning to crochet in order to make something and you will be buying the yarn sooner or later. So buy something that you will use.

It will be rather thin which will make stitches small and harder to make out. It’s also pretty short. You wouldn’t get all that far before needing to join a new piece. Crochet eats up a lot more yarn a LOT faster than needlepoint.

Can you do it. Sure, it’s yarn. Should you? Probably not as it will probably make learning new skills more difficult and more frustrating. A cheap ball of wool could be $6 or less from the seconds bin and it’s definitely worth that much IMO to avoid the hassle.
